HOMEWORK

The children have homework four days a week: Monday through Thursday. Homework is due the following day. The homework is always related to something we are doing in class. Sometimes the children will be building on something we have done or practicing a skill we are working on. On other occasions their homework anticipates something we will be doing the next day.

Children are responsible for doing their homework and bringing it to school the next day. I do not expect parents to check the children’s homework, though it is fine if you choose to help your child with it. I strongly encourage the children to put their finished homework into their backpacks as soon as they complete it.

Homework is always due the day after it is assigned. Children who do not bring their homework in will need to make it up at school the next day or have a double assignment the following evening. It is really helpful if your child has a quiet place and regular time to do homework, so it becomes part of the day’s routine.

There are times when some unforeseen circumstance makes doing homework impossible. If that occurs, just send a note in with your child. Likewise, if your child is having difficulty with homework assignments, it is really helpful if you let me know.

See the "Questions Sampler" on the 3-S Web site for suggestions of questions you can use if your child asks for help with math homework.

QUESTIONS SAMPLER

If your child asks for help in solving a math problem, questions such as these can be helpful.

Getting Started
What are you trying to figure out?
What do you already know?
What have you figured out so far?
Where is a good place to start?
Would drawing a picture or diagram help?
How can I help you without telling you the answer?

While Working
What strategy are you using to solve this?
What patterns do you see?
Why did you...?

Checking Your Solutions
How did you arrive at your answer?
Why do you think your solution is reasonable?
